Balloon ride Ypres: what you see from the air
Few places in the Westhoek give such a complete picture of the landscape as Ypres. On a balloon ride in Ypres you fly for at least 60 minutes above a region that tells a very different story from up high.
What do you see above Ypres?
The old town
The Cloth Hall and the Grote Markt stand out sharply in the centre, with St Martin's Cathedral close by.
Menin Gate and ramparts
The Menin Gate and the ramparts encircle the old town like a green belt.
The Heuvelland
Further on, the Kemmelberg, Catsberg, Rodenberg and Zwartenberg roll away as recognisable landmarks on the horizon.
Traces of the First World War
In the fields around Ypres, too, history is never far away: war cemeteries, ponds that were once bomb craters, and in places recognisable patterns marking the old trench lines. From the air that pattern stands out far more clearly than from the ground. Our route always depends on the wind on the day, though, so we can never guarantee flying over a specific spot. Read more in what you can see of WW1 by balloon and on the Westhoek and WW1 seen from above.
Combine your flight with a day in Ypres
Ypres is worth exploring on the ground too. The Cloth Hall houses the In Flanders Fields Museum, and every evening at 8 pm the Last Post sounds beneath the Menin Gate. If you have seen the city from the air first, you will see it differently afterwards.
