Balloon Ride over Nieuwpoort
Nieuwpoort lies where the IJzer meets the sea, on the edge of the wide IJzer plain. From the balloon, you see how the polders gradually give way to the IJzer estuary and the coastline — a landscape that owes much of its shape to centuries of struggle against the water.
That history is still tangible: during the First World War, the IJzer plain around Nieuwpoort was deliberately flooded to halt the enemy advance, an event that has shaped the view you see today. From the basket, you can trace the straight lines of dykes, sluices and canals that still keep this region dry and navigable.
