Balloon Ride over Alveringem
Alveringem is one of the most rural municipalities in the Westhoek: a patchwork of fields and meadows, cut through by the IJzer and linked by villages such as Beveren-aan-de-IJzer, Stavele and Hoogstade. From the balloon, you see that typical Westhoek stillness in its purest form — wide fields, straight waterways and scattered farmsteads stretching to the horizon.
Like the rest of the IJzer valley, this landscape still carries traces of the First World War: a hundred years ago, the IJzer marked the front line, and here and there small military cemeteries and memorials in the fields still recall it. From the air, they form a quiet contrast with the farmland that defines the area today.
